Porsche G-Series (Impact Bumper) Price Guide & Auction Results

Porsche redesigned the 911's front and rear bumpers for 1974 to meet new U.S. crash-safety regulations, giving the car the distinctive black-clad "impact bumpers" that define the G-series cars. Underneath the bodywork the changes ran deeper: a new 2.7-liter flat-six became standard across the lineup, and Porsche used the opportunity to simplify the trim structure, dropping the old T/E/S naming in favor of a single well-equipped 911 (badged Carrera in some markets) alongside the ultra-high-performance 930 Turbo, which launched in 1975 as the fastest production Porsche yet built and gets its own generation page here given how different its ownership experience is.

Early impact-bumper 2.7-liter engines earned a reputation for troublesome Nikasil/Alusil cylinder issues on U.S.-market cars, which collectors still factor into pricing today — a documented engine rebuild or replacement is a meaningful value driver on these years specifically. By 1976 Porsche had largely sorted the issues and moved to galvanized steel body panels, dramatically improving rust resistance versus the longhood cars that preceded them.
