The 3.2 Carrera replaced the SC for 1984 with a larger, more powerful 3.2-liter flat-six making 200 horsepower at launch (207 hp from 1987 on for U.S. cars), paired with Bosch Motronic engine management that made the car noticeably more tractable and reliable than earlier fuel-injection systems. It remained in production through 1989, making it the last of the "classic-bodied" 911s before the all-new 964 arrived, and by most measures represents the most thoroughly developed version of the original 911 platform.

The single biggest inflection point within the 3.2 Carrera's run came in 1987, when Porsche introduced the G50 five-speed gearbox — a Getrag-sourced unit with a hydraulic clutch and far more precise shift action than the long-serving 915 transmission it replaced. Among enthusiasts, "G50 cars" (1987–1989) command a real premium over otherwise-similar earlier 3.2s specifically because of the gearbox swap, and it's one of the first things knowledgeable buyers check.
